Atmadasi

Today I got a surprise in my inbox. It was a link to a short piece about my Bharata Natyam teacher, Shrimati Shyamala Mohanraj. Atmadasi reminds me why I was drawn and devoted to the dance in the first place-as a method of yoga or union with the divine-to meet, resonate and share from a “vibration inside,” as Shyamala so eloquently put it. In an age where traditions have become commodities, and watered down and/or morphed into Western models accommodating modern life, it is a pleasant reminder of their very basis and original intent-to realize the Self.

Thanks once again to the teachers, and their teachers, and their teachers, and their teachers, and their teachers…

Lineage

T. Balasaraswati was my teacher’s teacher. Highly regarded during her time, and now- for her mesmerizing performances that moved audiences worldwide, beyond culture, words and language-into the heart of dance, as a sacred transmission evoking our true nature through the art of bharata natyam.

May we take a moment to be grateful to share in such a lineage…
